Blessed Beltane, Witches!
Dashing this off quickly because I’ve got my head burried in getting my book proposal ready to send off to Llewellyn Publishing, after pitching to an editor at Paganicon in March. I’m dying to tell you what the book is about . . . but I wouldn’t want to jinx all the magick I’ve been working.
Here at Simple Witchery, I like to keep things . . . well, as simple as possible for busy modern witches. Most of the witching world celebrates Beltane on May 1st. Or perhaps they celebrate Hexenacht, also known as Witches’ Night, on May Eve (tonight). I wrote all about it in last week’s post (and last year’s).
The point my dear magickal beings, is that these are all made up observances. Hold onto your bloomers, I’m not saying they don’t have great meaning. I’m saying that every holiday for everything forever, has been designated (uh, made up) by someone.
Also, as I always like to remind my witches, the Sabbats on the Wheel of the Year represent seasons, not single days. The Quarters (Solstices and Equinoxes) Yule, Ostara, Lilith and Mabon mark the high-point of each respective season. The Cross Quarters Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas and Samhain are mid-points between the Quarters—transitions, liminal times.
The precise occurance of Beltane is marked by the Sun reaching 15-degrees of Taurus—May 5th this year. So there is no rush, no hurry, no reason to fret that you might be behind. You’ve got time to prepare.
If you want to know more about the astrological timing of the Sabbats, Witch on Fire at Patheos explains it all.
